Sun, Sea and Spray 2012 – Blackpool

Due to other commitments on Saturday and Sunday, today (Friday) was the only opportunity I had to get to Blackpool to see Sun, Sea and Spray 2012. This is a major urban art weekend. If you can get up to Blackpool over the weekend then do so. You can always pretend you’re going to see Elton John if necessary!

Unfortunately most of the artists were still at the sketching out stage, though some were well on with their work. These lads were from Croatia. The gentleman with the sketch on the A4 acetate was directing the two on the cherry picker.

This gentleman was from France. He was the only artist I saw with stencils.

Three gentlemen from Birmingham were painting a huge gable end near the South Shore. (Unfortunately, there was rain on the camera lens.)

The gentleman who was right at the top found it very difficult to spray at first because his hand was shaking so much because of the height.

Some work was going on at the North Pier.

There was also a lot of activity at the back of the Winter Gardens.

All of this urban art was organised by Robin Ross, a legend!

Would you buy a used spray can from this man?

What a great art experience. I’ve never seen anything like this before.

    • This is the second year of the event. You may still find videos of last year on youtube. What impressed me was that last year’s work has, generally, been respected with very little tagging or vandalism.

  2. Me neither, I’d love to be able to make it up there – looks amazing.

    • Even if you can’t make it this weekend it’ll still be worth going up in the next few months to see the finished product.
I’d also like to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to Warren who chauffeured me round in his tow truck. His three year-old daughter Natalia is a princess. I know this because she has jewels on her shoes!

  3. What an absolutely fascinating post! Love it! Thank you so much for sharing!

    • It is taking a long time to convince people the difference between Urban/Street Art like this and vandalism. This is an official event with council approval and sponsorship. It may be some time before Blackpool gets to the level of, say, Philadelphia but it’s certainly moving in the right direction.

Great journalism. Thank you for sharing.

  5. Thank you. Do you have any of your photo sets about Urban Art?

This event is brilliant – we loved it and will come back again to see the bits we missed. Elton who ?

  7. Glad you enjoyed it. Elton John is a bloke I saw for five shillings at Leeds University Union in the early 1970s. He was quite good. I wonder what became of him. 🙂
